Venezuelan WomanCoche Island, Venezuela

Isla de Coche is a small island in the Caribbean, in between mainland Venezuela and the larger Isla de Margarita. Isla de Coche is growing in popularity, but not a traditional tourist destination, which means the natural landscape and beaches are better preserved and bursting with unspoiled beauty.

Outside of the beaches, the attractions are few. Playa la Punta, a nice stretch of soft sand and warm Caribbean water, is the most popular. The cliffs of Playa el Coco are reminiscent of a (much smaller) Grand Canyon. By renting a car, you can explore the whole island in about two hours. Another option is a bicycle tour, which takes a little longer, of course, but allows you to linger and soak in the scenery and local atmosphere. You’ll find a number of exotic reptiles and birds inhabiting the island.

Expect a casual, laid-back attitude all over the island. Relaxation and extreme water sports are the main goals of visitors, who range from native Venezuelans looking for a weekend getaway and international visitors drawn by the winds and waves that make Isla de Coche an ideal windsurfing and kiteboarding spot.

Los Roques, Venezuela

Pristine, nearly untouched beaches, a mesmerizing coral reef, and virtually no commercial development–if you’re tired to traveling to destinations that turn out to be full of tourist traps, Los Roques, an archipelago in the Caribbean, north of Venezuela and a national park, may be your idea of paradise. Gran Roque is the main island, and the only one allowed to be populated. You won’t find large hotels or inclusive resorts–only remodeled fisherman’s homes that now function as small inns (called posadas). You also won’t find roads and only a few restaurants (but most posadas offer meals with your stay).

Isla de CocheIf you really want to get away, rent a boat for a day and have fun navigating the archipelago–chances are good you can find your “own” island to spend the day. The snorkeling and scuba diving are phenomenal; swim through coral reefs and underwater marine parks that few have seen. The numerous islands and keys provide a variety of beaches–whether you’re looking for wind and waves or a calm, still bay, you’ll find it within Los Roques.

Expect a low-key, laid-back atmosphere (shoes are almost entirely optional wherever you go). Those looking for a true Caribbean escape might find themselves never wanting to leave.
