What is Kiteboarding?

There is a sport that is like surfing, wakeboarding, and flying all at once.  If you’ve ever been to Pismo Beach on a windy day, you will see over two dozen kiteboarders in the water or doing tricks high above it.  Most of these riders are ordinary people that are simply addicted to this amazing extreme sport called kiteboarding.

Kiteboarding uses the wind to combine the aspects of surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and windsurfing into one extreme ocean sport.  The kite, anywhere from 6-20 square meters, powers the rider through the water.  The kite will have either 4 or 5 lines up to 27 meters long that connect to a control bar, which the rider pushes and pulls to control the kite in any direction.  The bar hooks into the rider’s harness, which is most often worn around the waist. A board similar to a wakeboard or surfboard enables the rider to fly over the water. Check out our kites, boards, and harnesses here

We carry Naish, DaKine, Slingshot, Neil Pryde, Caution, NPX, Starboard, Creatures of Leasure, Ocean and Earth, Werner, Garmin, AzHiAzIaM, MBS, and much more.

Rave reviews for the Naish Chopper
Surfing News

This just in from Steve Gates, one of the Gorge's Big Winds owners and renowned waterman:

"Every now and then it comes along, a true game changer. The real deal. Very different from all before it. Rob and I have been sailing it for the past three days.

The Naish Chopper. I hadn't even heard of it till we went to the Naish loft to pick up gear.

It's a sail. It comes in four sizes: small, medium, large and extra large. All four sizes rig on a 370. A really refreshing concept in simplicity: it's windy, I'll rig my small sail; it's pretty windy, I'll rig my medium sail; it's kinda light, I'll rig my large sail.

Ewan Jaspan's Australian Trip Diary
Kiteboarding News

Ewan: "So living in Australia might not always mean sunny white beaches, meaning where I live, Melbourne, isn't always what you would stereotypically think of when Australia comes into mind. Melbourne has its days of blue sunny skies and a 20 knot sea breeze, but most of the time the water is full of sewerage and the beaches are packed every time there is wind. This being the case, I decided to go to Perth in Western Australia for 6 weeks over our summer, to find wind, warmth and blue water. Arriving in Perth was the same as it was the year before, 10am and signs of the Fremantle Doctor (the famous sea breeze) were already evident, so straight to the beach with the 10m torch it was for another epic session. Perth as a place to kite has to be one of the best in the world. Through a normal summer (October - March), the wind blows 6-7 days a week anywhere between 15-30+ knots, making it ideal for a kiter of any level.

Karen Wrenn vs. the Channel Islands
SUP News

It was one year ago this month that Naish team rider, Karen Wrenn, took on the challenge of crossing the seven channels of California's Channel Islands - all on her Glide 17'0". The epic paddle, over five consecutive days and 150 nautical miles, made Karen the first stand up paddler to cross all seven channels (let alone the first female to brave crossing the sharky waters of SoCal's Santa Barbara Channel on an SUP).

Strive Surfboards team rider, Jamie Mitchell, wins ASL
Surfing News

Sydney, Australia - Strive Surfboards newest team rider, Jamie Mitchell, earns "Biggest Paddle In" award at the 2011/2012 Surfing Life's Oakley Big Wave Awards.

"That was the first time guys had really taken it on by paddling, and it was amazing to watch," said Damien Warr, winner of the overall biggest wave award and who after getting his own mind boggling wave, sat in deep water to watch Mitchell and the other paddle in nominees charge into bombs. "The day was just right, it was clean, not much wind, the sort of day we haven't had there since 2006."

When legendary waterman, Jamie Mitchell asked Jon Henderson to shape him a big wave gun for Australia, Jon wasted no time in crafting a 10' Gun suitable for waves the size of small mountains."I was stoked to have the opportunity to work with Jamie," said Henderson."I've been shaping and refining big wave guns for over a decade now. That 10' gun was the first board I made for Jamie. I guess it worked pretty good!"

Unique features of the Hadlow kite
Kiteboarding News

Flexifoil and Aaron Hadlow present, fresh for the 2011 season, the new HADLOW. Building on the exceptional performance of the 2009 Hadlow Pro, the 2011 HADLOW is the next evolution in freestyle kitesurfing. Created following an intense two year development period, the HADLOW builds on the foundation of precision performance and astounding power to create a kite that continues to redefine the boundaries of freestyle kitesurfing. Designed with Aaron’s unprecedented attention to detail and exacting attitude, the 2011 HADLOW aims to offer the complete package for today’s advanced kitesurfer. Traditionally aimed purely at the highly competent and advanced freestyle kitesurfer, the HADLOW continues to be the very purest performance machine on the market; however with a new depowered setting, Aaron has targeted a greater span of ability with his 2011 signature model. With a new focus on the progressive rider, you might be thinking that this year’s model has been scaled down. Far from it, Aaron has maintained his focus throughout the HADLOW’s development to produce the peak of performance in freestyle kitesurfing
