What is Kiteboarding?
There is a sport that is like surfing, wakeboarding, and flying all at once. If you’ve ever been to Pismo Beach on a windy day, you will see over two dozen kiteboarders in the water or doing tricks high above it. Most of these riders are ordinary people that are simply addicted to this amazing extreme sport called kiteboarding.
Kiteboarding uses the wind to combine the aspects of surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and windsurfing into one extreme ocean sport. The kite, anywhere from 6-20 square meters, powers the rider through the water. The kite will have either 4 or 5 lines up to 27 meters long that connect to a control bar, which the rider pushes and pulls to control the kite in any direction. The bar hooks into the rider’s harness, which is most often worn around the waist. A board similar to a wakeboard or surfboard enables the rider to fly over the water. Check out our kites, boards, and harnesses here

Read MoreJason Lee and John McMasters had little time to make it to a 2012 Superbowl party. So, they had to make a quick 4.85 Nautical mile paddle (5.5812). The weather was 75 degress in Avila Beach, perfect for Winter in California, so a wetsuit wasn't necessary. McMasters was riding the 2012 Bark Dominator, while Lee was riding the 2012 Jamie Mitchel by Birse. McMasters and Lee headed toward the end of the pier for a quick warm up as they waited for their third paddler, Eric Zino. Zino just bought the 2012 Larid Bark 14ft.
Riders Jason Lee, Natalie Lee, and Mike Mack (Hammer) went to Avila Beach and tested out the new 2012 Jamie Mitchel Navigator by Surftech. They went a distance of three miles in a glassy air temp of 73 degrees. Surftech continues to be the leader of SUP boards and the Jamie Mitchel Navigator is an example of their work. Owner of California Kiteboarding, Jason Lee, gave his take on the board in this blog. Stay tuned for the next blog as we will be doing a photoshoot of every angle of this board.
It was another beautiful day to stand up paddle board. California Kiteboarding, LLC applied Cal Poly's "Learn by Doing" philosophy on this adventure. But, the interesting part is the philosophy wasn't applied to Cal Poly students, instead on Cal Poly professors and Alumni. The professors were Carly Head, Carter Hammett, Amy Swanson, and Staley Avakian. They were all great sports, even when told they couldn't wear wetsuits.

The two crew leaders in charge of the ladies were Jason Lee and Wes Cooke. The Ladies included: Natalie Lee, Courtney Scallan, Michelle Cook, Vino Versato owner Cindy Giovacchini, Meg & Amy Boulware and a reporter from the Santa Maria Times. The conditions in Avila Beach were perfect for a time like July to stand up paddle board. The fog had made it a little cold, but provided a crisp sheet of glass to paddle around.
