Avila Beach Ladies SUP Mission

Avila Beach provides a variety of terrain for all levels of paddle boarding skill sets.

If this is your first paddle boarding experience, Avila Beach offers many flat-water areas to practice your balance. San Luis Obispo Creek runs along side the Avila Beach golf course and is a popular place for paddle boarders of all ages. The calm creek is a more forgiving fall than the ocean.

You can start your paddle on a sandy beach that is at the mouth of the creek, under the Avila Beach Drive overpass. Paddle up the stream for a light resistance workout and relax on your way back down to the beach.

For an ocean paddle, you can start anywhere along Avila’s coast line. You can paddle around the Avila Beach Pier and continue up the coastline to the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly SLO) Pier and then to the farthest one, Harford Pier (also known as Port San Luis Pier).

The paddle from the Avila Pier to the Harford Pier and back is about 2 miles round trip.

Touring around the Port San Luis on a paddle board is great for sighting. The Port is protected and offers a peaceful paddle through the harbor, seals, and other wildlife.

The waters are generally calm with a small swell that sometimes develops from the mouth of the San Luis Obispo Creek.

Naish’s inflatable boards are ideal for transporting multiple boards to the beach without the need of a large car. They roll up and fit into their carrying bags so you can easily carry them from a trailhead to the beach. After a few minutes of pumping up the boards, they transform into a durable surface without all the extra weight.

The inflatable SUP, Naish One is recommended for Avila because it is great for long distance touring with its sleek race outline. It is a sturdy board that has maximum traction deck pad for standing through any conditions.

Another inflatable recommended is the easy to carry, Alana Air. This board is a steady cruiser for taking in the scenic views around Avila. The progressive rocker makes it easy to maneuver around Avila Harbor.

Avila Beach is known for being one of San Luis Obispo’s warmest nearby beach. For the summer months the temperatures vary between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. And in the winter months it can drop to 40-70 degrees. It is recommended to check the wind and weather forecasts before you go to determine if a wetsuit is necessary for your paddle.
