Appleby in Top Form Heading Into BOP

Candice is on fire as we approach the Battle of the Paddle! With successive wins at the Tahoe Nalu, Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge and the Duke Ocean Festival, Candice seems to be peaking at the right time. "I feel ready! I've raced just about everyone in the past few weeks, my boards are fast, my body is strong and the BOP is held in surf-my favorite place," said Appleby. Candice kept her win streak alive a couple of weeks ago at the Surf Race to Victory finishing ahead of Morgan Hoesterey and Hallie Harrison.

Morgan & Leane's Peruvian Conquest

Mitcho and Becker Invade Europe

Roch and Rand are Tops in Tahoe

A few days ago, I stepped off an airplane and was greeted by my friend Leane Darling along with her new friend, Peruvian big wave charger Jaime Venegas. The two of them were smiling from ear to ear because they had just come from Pico Alto, a big wave spot in Punta Hermosa. Jaime explained that he had watched history take place that morning when Leane paddled out and dropped in on a few giant Pico Alto bombs… read Morgan's blog for the rest of the story. Fate is good to some people. For team riders Jamie Mitchell and Matt Becker, fate shined upon them on their trip home from the Surftech Jay Race in June. After the race, the two headed south bound for the Becker home in Santa Barbara. As fate would have it, Jamie recalled that a friend had offered him a place to stay near Santa Barbara. When the duo arrived to the friend's home, it turned out that the Princess of Monaco was there for dinner (JM has important friends!). Jamie and Matt being the charming fellas that they are, were invited by the Princess to spend a few weeks at her palace in Monaco. More info from their European exploits coming soon! The 2012 O'Neill Tahoe Fall Classic took place last weekend in pristine conditions. With more than 100 competitors in the hunt, Roch Frey lead the race from the start on his UL Bark prone paddleboard with Rand Carter not far behind. Roughly two hours into the race, Carter made a move on his UL Bark SUP, overtaking Roch with just over an hour left in the race.  Rand finished the 22 mile race in 3:35:20, beating out Frey by just over a minute. The two finished more than 15 minutes ahead of the 3rd place finisher! Click HERE for full race results.

Board Spotlight – 12'6"  Flowmaster

The new 12'6" Surftech Flowmaster was featured in the July 2012 issue as one of the best stand up paddleboards for beginners. While it is a great entry level SUP, the Flowmaster – with it's stable yet sleek design – is best known as the ultimate touring SUP. The Flowmaster features a soft traction pad running the length of the deck, combined with a set of tie-down points which allows for easy gear storage.

"Though it shares the general outline of a displacement-hull-style race board, the 12-foot-6-inch Flowmaster packs added thickness and float throughout, making it a steady, comfortable ride – more Cadillac than Ferrari. This long-distance board's sharp nose slices through chop, while the 30-inch width and mostly flat hull have even total beginners feeling stable immediately. The many tie-down points on the front deck make this board a good choice for multiday SUP camping trips and long-distance cruising." – Mens Journal
