Haleiwa Joe’s Paddle Race that stretched 5 miles from Waimea to Haleiwa Harbor kicked off on Labor Day weekend, Sunday, September 6th, 2009. The 20th anniversary race began at 11am with approximately 150 competitors. Naish team-riders Michi Schweiger and Bernd Roediger island hopped from Maui to join the Oahu crew. Edmund Pastana and Schweiger made a splash taking first and second in the 14’ class just 17 second apart. Their times would place them 4th and 6th amongst the unlimited class boards. Twelve-year-old Bernd Roediger won first place in the 12’6” class against all ages. Way to go! Also, congratulations to Erin Napoleon and his son Riggs for winning the unlimited class and the Junior class.
